Air to Water Heat Pump Cooling Option
Air-to-water heat pumps can be an excellent choice for a variety of
applications, suitable for new homes and retrofits of existing heating and
cooling systems. They are also an option when replacing existing air
conditioning systems, because the cost of switching from an air conditioning
system to a heat pump cooling and heating system is usually very low.
Your air-to-water heat pump and air conditioner
Using air to cool a water heat pump is not as simple as delivering
chilled water to your floor system. Most experts advise against cooling the
floor system because of the risk of condensation on the floor. These conditions
are ideal breeding grounds for bacteria, mites and molds. For this reason, most
experienced installers avoid radiant cooling. But there is another way.
If you have an electric or oil-fired boiler in your home, the only way
to provide air conditioning is to install a piping system and a separate air
conditioning system.
Fortunately, if you choose an air-to-water heat pump, you do not need to
install a separate system. By simply adding a piping system and our circulating
air processor, you can enjoy whole house air conditioning directly from the air
to water heat pump.
How air-to-water heat pumps provide air conditioning
Our air to water heat pump is called a fully reversible heat pump. This
means that in addition to making hot water for your radiant floor system, it
can also reverse the cooling process to make chilled water. However, instead of
delivering chilled water to your floor system, the air-water heat pump will
circulate this chilled water to the circulating air processor.
The circulating air processor is essentially a heat exchanger and a
blower. The heat exchanger transfers the heat from the air in the home to the
chilled water. The cold air in the air handler will now be blown through your
duct system as an air conditioner. Using this method, you can enjoy forced air
conditioning for the entire family.
The heat transferred to the water will be pumped back to the heat pump.
From there, the heat pump is basically like a refrigerator, using refrigerant
to transfer heat to the outdoor air.
