Heat pump water heater vs solar water heater

In modern residential and commercial spaces, hot water has become a necessity. This makes the heat pump hot water and solar water heater useful. Because they use freely available resources-heat and sunlight, both hot water heating schemes are desirable.

Heat pump hot water system

The heat pump hot water system uses refrigerant to collect heat from the surrounding air to provide hot water for the home.


The heat pump hot water system will absorb 35 degrees of heat from the air and provide free heat for your domestic hot water. The pump water heater generates an average of 3 kilowatts of heat for every kilowatt of energy used. A good heat pump system will effectively provide hot water below zero temperature. The average energy efficiency of the heat pump hot water system is 65-70%.


Solar water heating system

Solar water heating systems use the radiant heat of the sun to heat water-filled solar panels or roof vacuum tubes.


When the sun shines on the collector, the water inside will become hot, and then the free hot water will be stored in a storage tank for use. Since solar heating relies on radiant heat, if it is night or cloudy, the system will need to use a gas booster or an electronic component booster to heat the tank. In this way, the average energy efficiency of solar water heating systems is 65-80%.


Both solar hot water and heat pumps can help homeowners save money and reduce their carbon footprint. However, if you are looking for a more convenient, low-maintenance option, then heat pumps usually provide a better option:


1.Solar: Only heat water under direct sunlight (at night, do not heat in cool or cloudy days)

2.Solar: need electric or gas booster in bad weather and night

Which is better: heat pump water heater or solar water heater?

Heat pumps and solar heating have their advantages and disadvantages. The energy efficiency of heat pumps is slightly lower, but the initial cost of purchase and installation is much lower. They also have the advantage of not relying on weather because they can operate efficiently under all conditions. The disadvantage is that the system is more complicated, and the maintenance cost may be high compared with the solar water heating system installed on the roof.
