Will a Pool Heat Pump Work in Winter

When it comes to pool heaters, heat pumps are an excellent invention. They collect energy from the surrounding air and transfer it to the swimming pool's running water. As the temperature starts to drop, you may wonder whether the swimming pool heat pump works in winter? How does a heat pump absorb energy from the air? Does this mean that I cannot use the heat pump in winter?

Please rest assured that the pool heat pump can be used at any time of the year. Swimming pool heat pumps can operate at temperatures as low as -10 C° and as high as 45 C°. Therefore, if you live in an area where the temperature is lower than that, it may be worth considering ensuring that pool heating is used throughout the year.

So, how does the heat pump actually work?

There are several steps involved, so let’s briefly study each step in the pool heating process

1. The swimming pool heat pump receives water from the filter pump

2. The fan draws in warm ambient air

3. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air

4. The extracted heat heats the cold refrigerant in the coil into hot steam

5. The compressor pressurizes the warm vapor into hot gas

6. The hot gas passes through the inner tube of the heat exchanger

7. The pool water flows through the heat exchanger and becomes hot

8. When leaving the heat exchanger, the hot gas cools into a liquid

9. The cooled liquid refrigerant flows through the expansion valve for further cooling

10. Process restart

After understanding how the heat pump works. 7 problems that may be encountered in the winter swimming pool heating with heat pumps and how to solve these 7 problems:

1- Unrestricted work in winter

Pool heat pumps can harvest energy from the surrounding environment on the coldest days of winter. Of course, in cold weather, the efficiency and output of the heat pump will also be affected. This can be solved by increasing the power of the heat pump or extending the running time of the heat pump.

2- Defrost mode

The defrost mode can help you solve the problem of heat pump icing in winter. Whenever the swimming pool heat pump components start to freeze, the swimming pool heat pump will automatically activate the defrost function to prevent the heat pump from freezing. The heat pump will run in reverse for several cycles to melt the ice on the heat pump, and run normally after all the ice is removed. This process only takes a few minutes and usually does not affect your heating of the pool.

3- Always keep the heat pump well ventilated

The heat pump works by absorbing the surrounding air. Therefore, please remove the winter debris around the swimming pool heat pump in time to ensure that the heat pump is well ventilated. Keep in mind that the heat pump will not operate effectively if the airflow is blocked.

4- The swimming pool cover is your best friend

When you heat the pool, please use the pool cover. The swimming pool cover is the heat insulation layer of the swimming pool, which is very important to reduce the heat loss in the swimming pool. It can also reduce evaporation, which is one of the biggest losses of heat and hot water.

5- Choose a higher power heat pump

Larger power equipment size means higher efficiency, which is a relaxing winter for swimming pool heat pumps. If you are looking for winter swimming pool heating equipment, always choose higher-power equipment.

6- Silent and slow operation at night

Give your swimming pool heat pump some time. The heat pump is a jogger running 24 hours a day. You can set multiple timers on the WiFi app, and you can set the silent mode to run at night and run at full power during the day.

7-Remote control via Wi-Fi

Use your Wi-Fi app to manage the pool heat pump. There is no need to dip your toes in cold water to check whether the heat pump has completed heating. The heat pump application can easily help you monitor and control the swimming pool water temperature in winter.

The heat pump is a smart and efficient heating method, and it can heat the swimming pool all year round. If you have any questions about how to make the most of the efficient heating of the swimming pool in winter, please contact Leomon Technology.
