Swimming Pool Air Source Heat Pump Running Costs
A swimming pool heat pump is one of the most economical and environmentally friendly ways to heat a swimming pool. Thanks to their energy efficient processes, you can save a lot on the overall running cost of your pool while extending your swimming season!
For every kW you spend heating your swimming pool with a heat pump, depending on the heat pump you choose, about 5kW of thermal energy will go into your swimming pool because the electricity being pushed into the heat pump is only to power the fans and compressors. It's like spending £1 on heating and getting £5.
The system absorbs heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to your pool.
A heat pump can save approximately:
1. Up to 50% of natural gas heating costs
2. Up to 60% of the cost of oil or propane heating
3. Up to 80% of the cost of electric heating
The general display averages we compare here can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions, e.g. using a heat pump in warmer weather results in greater savings compared to colder months.
What is the real cost of running a swimming pool heat pump?
See below for examples of the 2 types of heat pumps we sell:
(These are suitable for large swimming pools, smaller heat pumps cost less to run!)
Leomon 20.4kW (for swimming pools between 50-95m3)
Leomon 20.4kW rated at 3.3kW
*Typical electricity bill is 17p per kWh
* So the running cost is 3.3kW x 17p = 56.1p per hour
* Assuming the heat pump runs on average 4 hours per day (usually less in summer), this would cost:
4 hours x 46.2p = £2.24 per day
Leomon i-Max 22 (for pools between 65-85m2 - 1.2m average depth)
The Leomon i-Max 22 is rated at 4.25kW
*Typical electricity bill is 17p per kWh
* So the running cost is 4.25kW x 17p = 72.25p/hour
*Assuming the heat pump runs for an average of 4 hours per day, this will cost:
* 4 hours x 59.5p = £3.07 per day
The total cost to heat a large swimming pool can be as low as £63 a month, but keep in mind that usually for outdoor pools you will only run the heat pump during the summer months.
In summer weather, when used with a solar cover, you may find some days your heat pump doesn't need to run at all!
However, in cold winter weather, you may find the heat pump running 4-8 hours a day.
