Can An Air Source Heat Pump Heat the Entire House?

Yes, an air source heat pump can absolutely heat an entire house. In fact, that's its primary design purpose.

However, its efficiency and reliability in heating depend on several key factors:

1. Appropriate Size (Heat Loss Calculation)
Like a gas boiler, the size of a heat pump must be correctly selected based on the specific circumstances of your house. Your HVAC contractor should perform a "Manual J" heat loss calculation to determine the exact heat loss in your house. If the unit is too small, it will run continuously but won't be able to keep the house warm.

2. House Insulation and Airtightness
Compared to traditional gas boilers, air source heat pumps provide heat at a lower and more consistent temperature. Therefore, they work best in well-insulated houses. If your house is older, poorly ventilated, or poorly insulated, the heat pump may struggle to maintain the required temperature and may require a larger, more expensive unit.

3. Climate and Outdoor Temperature
Historically, heat pumps have performed poorly in cold weather. However, modern cold-climate air source heat pumps are specifically designed to extract heat from the air even when outdoor temperatures drop to -15°F to -25°F (-26°C to -32°C).

4. Distribution Systems
1) Ducted Systems: These operate similarly to central heating systems, using the house's existing ductwork to distribute hot air to each room.

2) Ductless (Mini-Split) Systems: These use wall-mounted indoor units. To use this type of system to heat the entire house, you would need a multi-zone system with one indoor unit in each main living room and bedroom.

5. Backup Heating
In extremely cold climates, many systems are equipped with auxiliary electric heaters or are configured as dual-fuel systems (in conjunction with a gas boiler). These auxiliary heating units automatically activate if the air source heat pump cannot extract enough heat from the outdoor air to meet the thermostat's set temperature.
