Do I need Planning Permission to Install an Air Source Heat Pump?
In the UK, installing an air source heat pump generally does not require planning permission, as it is a permitted development project. Prior to 29 May 2025, planning permission was required if the air source heat pump was installed within one meter of the property boundary, but this requirement has now been removed.
However, if you are installing a large unit exceeding 1.5 cubic meters (greater than 0.6 cubic meters before 29 May 2025), planning permission is required. Additional restrictions apply to buildings on the protected list.
Planning permission may also be required if you intend to install multiple air source heat pumps, or if you reside in a protected area or a building on the protected list.
