Air Source Heat Pump Distance from House
1. Are there any restrictions on the type of house where a heat pump can be installed?
Our installers can recommend different types of air source heat pumps based on your house type. We recommend that you insulate your house before installing the heat pump.
Air source heat pumps need to be kept at a reasonable distance from your house; it is recommended that the pipe distance between the heat pump and your house not exceed 15 meters.
It is not recommended to install the heat pump near bedroom windows or doors that are about to be opened. Some heat pumps need to be placed on a hard surface with sufficient space around them to ensure good air circulation. Air source heat pumps cannot be installed in sheds. Our team will recommend the best installation location for the heat pump after an on-site survey.
2. What is the required distance from neighboring properties?
Under the Town and Country Planning (Generally Permitted Development) (England) Order, no planning permission is required for installation as long as the noise level of the air source heat pump does not exceed 42 decibels (A) when measured at the nearest neighbor's house. The assessment point can be located at any height on the boundary, but the location of the nearest neighbor's window or door is usually considered.
Compliance must be demonstrated using the calculation methods specified in MCS 020 a). If the calculations show that the 42 dB(A) limit is met, the installation is considered a permitted development.
While the primary concern is noise limits, physical limitations also exist:

If these conditions, particularly the noise limits, cannot be met, a full planning application must be submitted to the local authorities.
